  5. HPChrome works on any Atari ST, with a H-P DeskJet 500C colour
  6. printer, or with a standard DeskJet, DeskJet Plus or DeskJet 500
  7. fitted with the Colour Kit.
  8.  
  9. HPChrome prints 16-colour picture files in DEGAS (normal or
  10. compressed) and NEO formats.  It offers a choice of size and
  11. position on the page, with accuracy to 0.003in (0.08mm).  Page
  12. layout can be either Portrait (upright) or Landscape (sideways). 
  13. The whole image, or just a section of it, can be printed at Draft,
  14. Normal, or Best quality.  Colour-correction can be applied to
  15. compensate for the differences between screen and paper colours.

  18. What you need

  21. Any Atari ST computer (512K RAM upwards, colour or mono).

  23. Hewlett-Packard DeskJet, DeskJet Plus, or DeskJet 500 printer,
  24. with colour kit, 
  25. - or -
  26. Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 500C, with tri-colour ink cartridge, H-P
  27. part number HP51625A.

  29. HPChrome runs in High resolution (on an Atari mono monitor) or
  30. Medium or Low resolution (on a colour monitor or TV).  To make use
  31. of all the features, please use either High or Low resolution.

  41. The file CONVERT.BIN converts colour pics to mono so that they can
  42. be viewed on an Atari mono monitor.  All files are needed for the
  43. program to run (this is to prevent distribution of incomplete or
  44. modified copies, and does not apply to the registered version).

  47. Shareware
  48. =========
  49. HPChrome is SHAREWARE.  It is NOT FREE.
  50.  
  51. However, you are welcome to test and evaluate HPChrome v1 free of
  52. charge.  This version can also be freely distributed, subject to
  53. the normal shareware distribution practices.

  86. Colour Kit
  87. ==========
  88.  
  89. On the DeskJet 500C, full colour output uses the Hewlett-Packard
  90. Tri-Colour Cartridge, which contains Cyan, Magenta and Yellow ink.
  91.  
  92. For other DeskJet models, the Colour Kit converts any DeskJet,
  93. DeskJet Plus or DeskJet 500 printer into a full colour printer,
  94. creating output of the same quality as the new DeskJet 500C - or
  95. better!
  96.  
  97. The Colour Kit consists of ink cartridge refills in Yellow, Cyan
  98. (blue), and Magenta (red), with which you can refill your empty
  99. black ink cartridges.  Cleaning solvent, to remove all traces of
  100. black ink from the empties, is included.
  101.  
  102. To print in full colour, you simply use HPChrome with the
  103. appropriate printer option.  When prompted, change cartridges and
  104. re-insert the paper.  Yellow, Cyan (blue), Magenta (red), and
  105. Black are printed on separate passes through the printer.
  106.  
  107. When used with the Colour Kit, but not with the DeskJet 500C,
  108. HPChrome includes a Black ink pass.  Black and other dark areas in
  109. your picture will be printed in a more solid, monochromatic black
  110. than is possible with the DeskJet 500C (which creates black by
  111. combining Cyan, Magenta and Yellow inks).

  113. We use and recommend the Inkmun Colour Kit, distributed in the UK
  114. by System Insight.  However, other brands of Colour Kit may also

  139. These instructions are deliberately brief.  A full manual, with
  140. explanations of all the features and options, and hints and tips,
  141. is supplied to registered users.

  148. is displayed.

  155. of top left corner) is displayed.

  198. Mark one corner of your chosen rectangle with the cross-hairs, and
  199. click the mouse.  Adjust the box so that it encloses your chosen
  200. rectangle, and click again.

  202. This feature works in High and Low resolution, but not Medium.

  205. Quality Buttons

  208. Draft:  150dpi, draft quality (500C: 50% depletion, no shingling)
  209. Normal:  300dpi, draft quality (500C: 25% depletion, 50%
  210. shingling)
  211. Best:  300dpi, letter quality (500C: no depletion, 25% shingling)

  214. Colour Menu
  215. ===========
  216.  
  217. Click one of the 16 coloured (or patterned) boxes to select a
  218. colour.  Its value in the ST palette (RGB 0 to 7) and in the H-P
  219. palette (RGB 0 to 255) are displayed.
  220.  
  221. The H-P colour value is affected by whether Gamma Compensation is
  222. selected, the value of Gamma (0 to 9.9), and whether Grey Balance
  223. is selected.  It can also be Nudged by up to 99 RGB levels up or
  224. down.  A Cast of up to 99 RGB levels up or down can be applied to
  225. the whole palette of 16 colours.

  229. ===========

  231. The picture, with the selected rectangle (if any) outlined, is
  232. displayed.  Moving the mouse around will display its current co-
  233. ordinates and the colour index of the pixel it is over.

  235. This feature works in High and Low resolution, but not Medium.

  238. Options Menu
  239. ============
  240.  
  241. Shingling and Depletion
  242. Applicable to the DeskJet 500C only.  Normally determined by the
  243. Quality setting (Draft/Normal/Best).  Depletion removes dots from
  244. the printed image to reduce ink coverage.  Shingling prints the
  245. image in narrower stripes to avoid 'banding'.

  247. Printer
  248. DeskJet 500C (with tri-colour cartridge) - prints the whole page
  249. in one pass, with data compression.
  250. DeskJet Plus, DeskJet 500 (with Colour Kit) - prints the page in
  251. four passes (yellow, cyan, magenta, black), with data compression.
  252. DeskJet (with Colour Kit) - prints the page in four passes
  253. (yellow, cyan, magenta, black).
  254. Data compression (Graphics Mode 2) is used on DeskJet Plus and
  255. higher models.  To turn it off, select DeskJet.
